Identification and Visualization
of Low-Pressure Vortices in Turbulence

Hideaki Miura and Shigeo Kida  (National Institute for Fusion Science)

Abstract:

The sectional-pressure-minimum-and-swirl method, developed to extract central axes and cores of swirling vortices, is applied to homogeneous and isotropic numerical turbulence and compared with several typical identification methods of vortex cores. The time-evolution of swirling axes is traced smoothly. Low-pressure swirling vortices that are extracted by this method take thin tubular forms with cross-section diameter of about eight times larger than the Kolmogorov length scale.
